New Managing Director, Professor David Mackey brings to the Lions Eye Institute a stellar international reputation in the field of population genetics with a special interest in the genetic basis of eye disease.

Selected from an international field of candidates, Professor Mackey has worked at the University of London and the John Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA. A graduate of the University of Tasmania, he was Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Melbourne and Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Tasmania. His work has been recognized by a long list of awards and international publications.

With blindness set to increase over the next 15 years, his combined expertise in clinical ophthalmology and research will further enhance LEI’s ability to discover new information at the bench and bring it into clinical practice.

Professor Constable will continue as Ophthalmic Surgeon both at LEI and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. His new career direction will be on major research projects associated with human and laboratory trials of new types of gene therapy, a world first in this area. Last year he was awarded the Helen Keller Award from Lions International in recognition of his contributions to saving sight.
