The Lions Save-Sight Foundation (LSSF) endows the Chair of Ophthalmology at the University of Western Australia and contributes to the salaries for Professor Ian Constable and Research Director Professor Elisabeth Rakoczy.

Professor Constable, with the help of Lions in WA and various  grants established the Lions Eye Institute to service sight research and clinical treatment in 1983.

Although the LEI is an independent, autonomous body it maintains a strong relationship with Lions and provides medical professionals for our free public eye Screenings and sets operational guidelines. LSSF raises funds for equipment, research projects, scholarships and fellowships including the Brian King Post Doctoral Fellowship jointly funded by the Institute and the Foundation.

Although operating as totally separate bodies we are proud of the work carried out by LEI in the field of eye health.
Professors Constable’s commitment to furthering science as a way of solving conditions which cause blindness led to his appointment as President of the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology serving the needs of 56% percent of the world’s population. Research teams at LEI lead the world in diabetes, retinal and gene therapy in sight saving discoveries.
