Although operating as totally separate bodies, the Foundation is proud of its long association with the Lions Eye Institute. Through the support of the Lions Clubs of Western Australia, the Foundation continues to fund the Lions Chair of Ophthalmology at the University of WA first endowed in 1973 with the appointment of Professor Ian Constable. Professor Constable stepped down as Managing Director of the Institute in March 2009 and his position was taken up by the internationally awarded expert in the field of ophthalmology genetics, Professor David Mackey who also takes up the Lions Chair. The Foundation continues its contribution to the salaries of Professor Mackey as it did with Professor Constable and also for the Research Director Professor Mariapia Delgi-Esposti. Other support consists of the jointly funded Brian King Post Doctoral Fellowship and ongoing funding for research and equipment by the top scientists and researchers working at the Institute. The Lions Save-Sight Foundation funds the Jack Hoffman Scholarship for the appointee to work for one year at LEI. Medical professionals at LEI set the guidelines and provide assessments for LSSF’s free public eye screenings throughout WA for preventable and treatable eye disease. A working partnership in the prevention and treatment of eye disease. |
